The Civic Museum is located just a short walk from the breathtaking Lake Bracciano.
The Civic Museum of Bracciano is small and contains beautiful sculptures, among them: the bust of Dante, Venus and Adonis. The museum is close to the Odescalchi Castle and has a beautiful view of the lake.
Ana María Lenardi. Review from Google
It is an area rich in natural beauty. Its history is introduced by Director Cecilia Sodano: ‘Bracciano was founded in the 13th century by the family of the Prefetti di Vico, who founded Castrum Brachiani probably to invest their capital. The castrum was a fortified place with a fortress, church and vassal dwellings. The place was probably chosen for its location on the Via Clodia, halfway between Rome and Viterbo: the family of Vico had interests in Rome and its fiefs in Tuscia, so Bracciano could constitute an important logistical base.”
The first room of the museum introduces the history of Bracciano, its community and the origin of the municipality. The community room displays a series of municipal coats of arms, from the 16th to the 20th century, and a letter of greetings from the Doge of Venice to the Duke of Bracciano. There are also historical maps of the territory and ancient industrial activities. Inside the museum there are multimedia spots, which provide information on relevant monuments in the town.
Decidedly less well known than the almost adjacent Castle, the museum houses part of Bracciano’s historical and artistic heritage in a few rooms, enhanced in the setting of the cloister of the former Augustinian convent. I would have taken a quick look at the exhibits and run to enjoy the village air. Fortunately, we met a very knowledgeable and helpful guide who, in about 40 minutes of visiting, made us appreciate some of the artefacts on display, giving us a glimpse of local history.
